While many of the top Spanish language pop/rock bands originate from Latin America, one of the best and most popular, Hombres G, are from Spain. The band is one of the biggest bands from that country and have been putting out hits for over 35 years. Consisting of David Summers on bass guitar and vocals, Rafael Gutierrez on guitar, Dani Mezquila on guitar, and Javi Molina on the drums. Their debut album was live from the Madrid Rock-Ola concert in 1983. Their sound is very much influenced by many English rock bands like the Beatles plus blues rock, punk rock, American disco, and new wave music of the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
The two principals of the band met purely by chance in the back studio of a TV show called Aplauso or “Applause” where they were both participants. Through a series of happenstance, the various eventual members of the band were all between gigs and decided to get together and play. Their name came from the movie “G Men” a James Cagney film from 1935.
The Band Held Some of The Largest Spanish Language Concerts Of The Time
Hombres G held huge concerts in Lima, Peru, that drew over 20,000 people on the Lima airport tarmac. The entire concert was filmed and is still available to view on Youtube worldwide. Later on, as the members gained experience and age, their sound progressed into a more adult genre reflecting their lives at the time. After the huge commercial success of “Hombres G” in 1985, Voy A Pasarmelo Bien of 1989, Esta Es Tu Vida in 1990, then the band took a break from music after the release of Historia de La Bikini of 1992.
A full ten years later the band reconvened in 2002 to release the album “Peligrosamente Juntos,” or “Dangerously Together” which contained some past hits, new songs, and demo recordings from various venues. Then the band went on a long international tour as well. The next year a group of Latin rock bands made a tribute album full of Hombres G songs called “Voy A Pasarmelo Bien” that contained many hit songs from popular artists of the time like Alex Ubago, Antonio Vega, Mikel Erentxun, and El Canto del Loco.
Their Concert Tour Of 2004-2007 After 12 Year Hiatus
The studio album of 2004, called “Todo Esto Es Muy Extrano,” or “All Of This Is Very Strange” was produced by Nigel Walker and came up with 11 brand new songs. The album rose in the charts with the single “Por Que No Ser Amigos?” or “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and several other great hits. There were also guest appearances by the Spanish rock band singer from the band El Canto Del Loco that turned out to be popular singles as well. Over the three year period, the band toured Latin America, the US, and Spain on several different tours.
Their tenth album, titled just “10” was released at the end of 2007 and immediately was a hit with two singles, “Me Siento Bien” or “I Feel Fine” and “Hombre Real” or “Real Man.” The album featured a turn in their music into more of a hard rock techno sound more similar to what you might hear from the English bands Coldplay, or U2. Hombres G again toured widely in Europe and the US to support the album and also publicize charities for the victims of the horrible earthquake in Peru during 2007.
Over the years the band has enjoyed a lot of success with singles. Every album has had several and there have been a lot of albums. A quick count online shows that they have released 39 singles so far. Plus they have three live albums, and 12 studio albums to their credit with the last in 2011. They remain very popular throughout all of Latin America where you will find their songs on every Jukebox, (Rock-Ola) in every bar or disco.
The band is still active and can be found on Twitter and Facebook where they plan on releasing more songs over time. In the future, the band states that most of their songs will be released online digitally, rather than an album or CD formats. Of course, this is much easier in today’s connected world where songs can be downloaded anywhere at any time onto modern listening devices. Stay tuned to their releases by finding them on Twitter for the most up to date news.
